Even if you are the best writer in the world and have great search engine optimization for a great offer, the chances of you making money with an article is minimal if you only write one article.
You need to write a bunch of articles. Not just one. The Internet is a big place. It's easy to get lost and never be found by your target audience.

You can write a whole bunch of articles around one keyword and you will stand a good chance of making some money. However, if you write a whole bunch of articles around a group of 'buyer' keywords one or more of your articles will be found by your target market.
If your article is found by the right person you stand a good chance of making some money with your article.
People who teach how to make money with articles want to encourage new people to give it a try so they don't mention how much writing they will need to do to be successful.
I think that is a disservice to their clients. If a person knows that they will need to write 20 articles or a hundred articles to make money, they will be mentally prepared. When they get started on the project, they will not expect to get rich overnight.
If a person actually does write a hundred articles for a keyword group they are likely to make some substantial money from their efforts.
The reason they started their project was to make money, so if they are successful in making money from their articles they will be happy. If you never tell people they will need to write a whole bunch of articles, they will never do it and are likely to get disappointed and walk away from a perfectly legitimate way of making money online.
It's important to realize that you will need to write a bunch of articles, but if you take the time to learn how to select the proper keywords, do the search engine optimization properly and find the right offer, you will be far more successful than if you ignore these elements.
